Take a Kid Fishing Program with Carl Sgro

I remember a story I've read several years ago about a father and his son, who he used to bring with him on fishing trips, spending hours and hours engrossed in this pastime. They would do this whenever the father finds the time away from from his busy schedule at work, and you could see from the gleam in the boy's eyes that he would always look forward to these fishing trip moments.

The Use of Wall Tiles for Your Home Remodeling Project

(photo courtesy of Divisions Unlimited Inc.)

The tight economy and the declining trend in the real estate industry couple with the rash of foreclosures that swept across the nation have caused a dramatic decrease in home prices affecting several states and cities. Homeowners from Massachusetts to Alaska basically just want to maintain a high and profitable resale value for their homes, even if they do not have an immediate plan of flipping houses.

Considerations for Choosing a Contractor for Your Home Improvement Project

(photo courtesy of Sam Yu Realty)

Success can be a relative term and could signify both tangible and intangible elements in life, but for most people, success is equated to having tangible properties like fabulous homes and established businesses. For successful business people and professionals in Massachusetts, rewarding one's self with an expansion or a renovation on their beloved abode is just fitting for all the hardships and determination they exerted to get to where they are right now. If you are part of this group of people and is planning on a home improvement project, then you should take more research and consideration in choosing the right contractor to do the job for you. Making a critical mistake in this area can let you lose all the hard work that you have invested in that contributed to your success.

Gardening and Mother’s Day

I remember those times when I was still studying in High School when my mother started installing pieces of driftwood in our front lawn. She was planning to put up an orchid and flower garden that time and had prepared quite a considerable number of small pots where the orchids would grow. On top of that, she also had a few bonsai pieces strewn here and there and the garden was quite a relaxing thing to behold.

Now that we’ve started with our urban farm, me and my wife assigned ourselves on separate farm duties – I’ll take care of the animals and she’ll take care of the vegetable and herb garden. On top of my free-range chickens, we were also raising rabbits, game chickens, and Red Tilapia in drums. My wife, on the other hand, had quite a few successes with her vegetable garden and already harvested bokchoy, Chinese cabbage, okra and cassava. I’ll describe all of these produce on my next posts.

Despite all that, I noticed that we lacked some things – flowers and other ornamental plants just like what mom used to nurture. That would be the next project as we had to clear another area in our urban farm specifically for such plants.

Azalea bonzai by www.1800Flowers.com

Come to think of it, Mother’s day is fast approaching and the best time to prepare for a gift to mothers would be several days or weeks ahead of time to avoid rushes and poor choices. I would recommend a Mothers Day plant like an orchid or a beautiful bouquet of flowers. If she has a green thumb just like my mom, give her an amazing bonsai gift made from gardenia or azalea.

Another great Mothers day plant gift suggestion would be sets of herbal plants like rosemary, bay leaf and other mint or herbal plants. Your mom would find such gifts excellent and start her on a new project to pursue.

Whatever gift you would give your moms this coming Mother’s Day celebrations would be a welcome thing for her – particularly if the gift was given with an abundance of love.

Everything is Bigger in Texas

(just a few laughs for you to ease our minds off the economic crisis)

There was a blind man on his way to Texas. He is on the airplane, and he is in First Class. He goes to his seat, and feels them, they are huge. He asks the stewardess "Aren't these seats kinda' big?" She replies "Oh, everything's bigger in Texas."

Then he gets to Texas, and he goes to his room. He walks, and walks and didn't hit the wall for a few minutes, and he was walking in a straight line. He asks the Bellboy "Isn't this room kinda' big?" The Bellboy replies "Yes, everything's bigger in Texas."

Then he gets thirsty after a little while, and goes down to the bar, and orders a little glass of beer. the Bartender gives him a gallon big glass. The blind man feels it, and says "I said a SMALL glass." The Bartender says "Everything's bigger in Texas."

So after the blind man finishes the big Texas beer, he asks "Where's the restrooms?" The Bartender says "The third door on the right."

The blind man is walking, feeling the doors, and he trips. He goes to the 4TH door instead of the 3rd. the 4th door goes right out to the pool.

The blind man opens the door, and falls in, thinking it was the restroom. He falls, looks frantic, waves his arms, and yells "Don't flush! Don't flush!"

Starting to Feel the Heat?

The cold season is almost over. Although there is still some remnants of cold rain here and there, one could really feel the heat starting to rise. My kids are jumping at this opportunity to pester me to take their inflatable swimming pool (currently deflated and squeezed inside a box) from storage for a chance to soak in water the whole day. Well, with summer just a few weeks away, I might as well oblige.

The first one I bought for them was not inflatable and I found out too late that my son could barely fit inside if he stretched himself out. Well, they really didn't mind at all. The only problem was I made the mistake of laying the pool directly on concrete, barely sweeping small debris underneath. Stone particles eventually made their marks on the pool's plastic surface. After a few days of use leaks started to appear, which eventually grew to rips with water gushing out.

When I finally bought a really big inflatable pool I made sure that no rips nor tears will occur this time. I secured the base with plywood then overlayed it with linoleum. I made sure no part of the pool touches concrete or anything that could cause any damage to the pool. Well, it worked and my kids couldn't be any happier. I couldn't be any happier.

Unless they ask for a full-sized swimming pool next time!

Roses are red.... Other roses are... well, colorful....

© 2009 by Peter Allan Mariano

A vase of multi-colored roses.

No pun intended, but I was just amazed with the myriad colored roses that flower shops are coming up with, now that Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. These amazing roses that they come up with can come in yellow, orange, peach, (was that lavender?), purple, pink, red and white. (Some of my Goth friends were even looking for black and dark blue).

Nothing excites a girl more than receiving a dozen red roses on Valentine’s Day. I know for a fact that this is true when I gave my wife a dozen long stem roses last year during Valentine’s Day. I had our two-year old baby girl wrapped in red ribbon, then had her carry the bunch of flowers to her mom saying, “Hape Bayentimes!”

Suddenly remembering something I read over the net about the meaning of these colored roses, I tried to search for some info regarding and looked at some websites like 1800Flowers.com, which portrayed a remarkable array of flowers including multi-colored roses, and some other flower related sites. I came up with the following:

Yellow Roses – A sign of true friendship. Yellow roses are given to people whom we share our joy and happiness. It can also signify “Congratulations” or “glad to have you here”.

Orange or Peach Roses – Vibrant energy is often depicted with the color orange. A bunch of orange roses signify a personal fascination, passion or longing to the recipient. Peach roses are more subdued and signify sincerity and gratitude. It can also mean you’re sharing sympathy to the person.

Lavender or Purple Roses – A lavender rose means enchantment or basically love at first sight. “I adore you”, that’s what a person meant when giving a lavender rose. Purple roses have the same basic meaning, but it is more attributed to elegance and grandeur.

Pink Roses – This kind of rose signifies gentle, sweet and innocent emotions and thoughts. It also means grace, gentleness and refinement. These roses are given as a sign of admiration, simple joy and happiness.

Red Roses - The ancient symbol of love and beauty, red roses simply means “I Love You”. It signifies steadfast and enduring love. It can also mean great courage and respect.

White Roses – White is the ancient symbol of purity. It can also signify innocence. Such meanings made white roses perfect for bridal bouquets to signify the purity of marriage, as well as honor, loyalty and a new beginning.

Now that you know the meaning of these multi-colored roses, you can now start giving them away and can rightfully explain the meaning of the color and why you are giving it to them.

Just wait till I get my hands on a black rose!

Toilets: Have a Seat

by Pete Mariano
© 2008
Links2Prosperity

Have your ever seen a picture of the famous bronze and marble sculpture named “The Thinker”? This work of art depicts a man seated and hunched towards himself, right hand supporting his chin, mind totally engrossed in deep thought. Well, whenever I see an image of this artwork, I cannot help but picture it as a man seated on a toilet, just like what you and me would probably do every morning, pondering on his activities for the day. Friends often narrate how many great ideas come to mind whenever they are seated on their toilet seats, that we jokingly call it ‘The Throne.”

A toilet is basically a plumbing fixture that we use to collect and dispose of our bodily wastes. It usually comes with a tank that stores water that is used to dispose of the collected waste. These wastes are eventually “flushed” down and collected onto an isolated septic tank or disposed onto sewers and transported to a wastewater treatment plant. Toilets come with another fixture called toilet seats that are basically seat and lid combinations that cover the toilet bowl when not in use. The seat is ergonomically contoured to make it comfortable for the user to use and sit on. It can also be raised or lowered to facilitate cleaning. Great debates would usually break out in homes regarding this, as women would always prefer the toilet seats to be down for aesthetic purposes in-between use, but wants men to raise it up upon use. Males usually could not care less whether it is a raised toilet seat or otherwise – as long as he could aim and shoot (or sometimes shoot and aim, which usually triggers these debates).

There are two categories of toilets based on the disposal method. The DRY toilet requires no plumbing and does not need water for disposal. It uses a certain type of chemical to collect and sanitize the waste material. Some malls and public toilets are already using this type to save on water. The dry method is also used for portable toilets. The second type is the WET toilet, which requires plumbing and a water input used for evacuation of the waste material.

Toilets come in three basic types. The squat toilets, which are used in some parts of Europe and Asia, have bowls that are recessed at ground level and could be used by squatting on top. It may or may not have a water input. The more common type is the seat toilet, or the flush toilet, which are preferred in Western countries and other parts of the world. Another type is the urinals, which are mainly used to dispose of urine and are usually installed in restaurant, malls and other public places.

Toilets are commonly made of porcelain, while the more expensive models are made of ceramic. These usually come in white but they can also be manufactured in different colors. There are also toilets made of metal like in some portable toilets, or those used in prisons.

Toilet seats on the other hand are made of different types of materials like porcelain, plastic, steel, molded wood or even ivory. They come in different styles and colors. A Kohler toilet for example has toilet seats that can come in 3,000 different variations of colors to complement the bathroom design for which it is intended to be installed. These are usually priced from US$ 20 to US$ 100 depending on the material.

The most popular toilet manufacturer is American Standard. An American Standard toilet has cost effective designs which ranges anywhere from US$ 200 to US$ 500. This brand is very popular in the US and other parts of the globe. Another famous manufacturer is the Kohler Company, which have slightly more expensive products than American Standard. A Kohler toilet is fast becoming the fixture of choice in more expensive housing projects. There are also several manufacturers of toilets and toilet seats but these two mentioned have become the standard for most western homes.

There are also high tech toilets, which originated in Japan where they integrated advanced technology into toilets to give it more automatic functions. Some of these features include automatic flushing, water jets and blow dryers. The biggest maker of these types of toilets is TOTO of Japan. These toilets cost from around US$ 200 up to US$ 5000 depending on the added features.

Old toilets are designed with tanks that dispense 7.0 GPF or Gallons Per Flush of water. To save on water and natural resources, it is now mandated for manufacturers to build toilets with a lower GPF. New models now come in 3.5 GPF but there are even newer innovations that use only 1.6 GPF. That could save the user considerable dollar amounts per year from their water bill.

In order to save on water, users should ensure that there are no leaks in the toilet system. Water can leak from the tank to the bowl. You can detect this when you see water being ejected onto the bowl in various degrees and the toilet appears to flush on its own. This is definitely a water leak and may be caused by a defective valve. Most toilets have a rubber flapper valve. When you find such leaks, it would be best to have your toilet repaired. Minor toilet repair can be done by the user himself, as there are available repair kits in Do-It-Yourself shops. However, if the damage is severe, it would be best to call a qualified plumber to do the job.

There are a lot of literature regarding toilets, toilet seats and other plumbing fixtures. It is wise to educate ourselves in these materials so we could choose the best system for our homes. It is also advised for homeowners to learn how to do minor repairs in their bathroom fixtures, including the toilet. Those quick repairs that you can perform on your own could save you a lot of money, and help Mother Earth save on water.

shalom,
